Memorial of Saint Anthony, Abbott
Saint of the day
Saint Anthony of Egypt (251-356)
After his parents passed away, Saint Anthony made sure that his younger sister finished her education and was well looked after, then sold all of his possessions and gave the money to the poor. He then set out into the desert alone to live the removed, prayerful life of a hermit. Anthony soon attracted attention for his holy ways, and many people flocked to him seeking healing and counsel. Anthony eventually had so many followers that he founded two monasteries. He briefly left the quiet work and prayer of the monastery to travel to Egypt and fight Arianism. Anthony became so well-known for his holiness and good counsel that Emperor Constantine the Great wrote to him asking for his prayers. Saint Anthony of Egypt is the patron saint of basketmakers, butchers, and pigs, among many other things.
Reflection
Saint Anthony was such a wonderful example of holiness and good counsel that many followers flocked to him. Do you recognize the people who are good Christian examples in your life? Spend a few minutes in prayer thanking the Lord for the people you encounter who point you in the right direction.
Prayer
Dear God, help me to recognize the wisdom that I encounter each day so that I can become more wise and more grounded in you. Thank you for the people you have sent into my life to point me in the right direction. (Taken from “Good News Day by Day: Bible Reflections for Teens.”)
