Monday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time

Saint of the day

Saint Charles of Sezze (1613-1670)

Saint Charles was born in Sezze, which is southeast of Rome. He was inspired to join the Franciscans and held small, humble jobs in the order. Examples of these positions included cook, porter, sacristan, gardener, and beggar. When Charles's superior instructed him to give food only to traveling friars who came begging at the door, Charles disagreed, but listened to orders. When the superior's new rule went into effect, the alms to the friars started decreasing. Charles persuaded his superior to resume giving alms to everyone who came to the door begging, and alms to the friars started increasing. He was also well known for his writings, and wrote several religious books, including his autobiography. Saint Charles of Sezze passed away in Rome and was canonized in 1959.

Reflection

Saint Charles of Sezze understood the importance of ministering to the less fortunate. Do you remember to thank God for the many blessings in your life, and share your time, talent, and treasure with those who have less? Spend a few quiet minutes with the Lord. Pray to be more mindful of those who go without.

Prayer

I am grateful for my many blessings, generous God, for I know that I am well cared for. May I always be mindful of those who go without and of my duty to care for them. (Taken from “Good News Day by Day: Bible Reflections for Teens.”)
