Memorial of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Saint of the day

Saint Athanasius (c.297-373)

Saint Athanasius was one of the Church's most dedicated soldiers against Arianism. His strong defense against this heresy did not sit well with some, and he was sent into exile five times. However, Athanasius kept persevering for what he knew to be right. He was also an advocate for spiritual reading. He said, "You will not see anyone who is really striving after his advancement who is not given to spiritual reading." Saint Athanasius was named a Doctor of the Church.

Reflection

Saint Athanasius set an example in both his actions and his words. Through his perseverance, Saint Athanasius taught Christians how they are to approach difficult times. Through his teachings on the importance of spiritual reading, Saint Athanasius reminds Christians to further their knowledge of their faith in order to develop spiritually. Do you ever read to better understand your faith?
