Memorial of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saint of the day
Sts. Joachim and Anne (1st century)
According to an ancient Church tradition, Joachim and Anne are the names of Mary’s parents. While we do not know much about them, we do know they raised Mary to practice her faith and to be a strong and courageous person and a devoted mother. They were also Jesus’ grandparents, so in a sense this feast day is “Grandparents’ Day.” We would, of course, not be here if it were not for our own grandparents. (Taken from "Take Ten: Daily Bible Reflections for Teens.")
Reflection
Although few concrete historical facts are known about Saints Joachim and Anne, the virtue, faith and strength of their daughter Mary testify to their character and courage. In order to create an environment in which a human, namely Mary, could become the Mother of God, Joachim and Anne likely lived with unparalleled love, faith and humility. How can you strive to create an environment that is edifying and transformative for those around you?
Prayer
Ask God to teach you how to create meaningful and transformative environments for your friends, family and coworkers.
