See, Judge, Act
Catholic Social Teaching and Service Learning
By Erin Brigham
Overview
Designed for university service-learning courses using the foundational principles of Catholic social teaching
As an increasing number of colleges and universities add service-learning components to their undergraduate curriculum, this new resource offers an engaging framework for community-based learning. See, Judge, Act reflects on the principles of Catholic social teaching identified by the US Bishops: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community, and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care for God’s Creation. The reader is encouraged to apply these principles to contemporary, societal issues through service learning using the see-judge-act process by—seeing social situations, judging them in light of principles drawn from the Catholic Church’s social teaching, and identifying actions intended to promote justice and improve the situations of those being served.
