Overview

The 10 short stories in The Centurion and the Songbird retell stories from the Gospels, each from the point of view of a character in the narrative. Stimulating and engaging, these stories read deeply into the biblical story, bringing the Bible's message and characters to life and opening hearts to new, imaginative understandings.

  • Thaddeus, a young man worried about the life of his soul, seeks out a prophet to ask him what he must do to earn eternal life.
  • Olivia goes to Calvary to witness the death of her beloved teacher, Jesus, whose life is entwined with hers and with that of her husband, Pontius Pilate.
  • Mattathias works for a Roman centurion who seems to respect Jewish beliefs and customs. But Mattathias is confused and angered when Flavius seeks healing for his slave from the troublemaker Jesus.

A companion leader's guide is also available, which includes suggestions for using the stories with groups.

By Heidi Borton, VOYA

Believable characters, smooth narrative, and hopeful endings characterize each story. . . . The author avoids pat answers to complex questions and situations while portraying authentic Christianity. Characters struggle with issues of faith, pray, see God at work in their lives, and grow in understanding in a way recognizable to believers. God is portrayed as loving, faithful, and intimately involved in the lives of his children. With a talent for details recognizable to all readers, Daoust uses simple and humorous language to describe truth.
