Vocations: Answering God's Call

by Ben Wolinsky with Olive Branch United

Vocations is all about the role of the commoner in Christianity. The first vocation is where Mary Magdalene is told to go out and tell the people that Jesus has risen. This might not seem like a major step, but keep in mind that women in those days a woman’s testimony was rarely accepted in court. In the event where a witness was required, a woman would not be admitted. Perhaps this is the start of the Christian doctrine, in that it did not discriminate between men and women.

Excellent Textbook on Morality For Kids

by Ben Wolinsky with Olive Branch United

Christian Morality

A veteran teacher once said to me, “You don’t need a textbook to teach these kids; it’s all about how you do it.” I’m inclined to disagree for one reason only; a good textbook encourages the young to learn on their own. When you give your students their textbooks for the course, they’ll think one of the following; either “these textbooks are junk, so the school doesn’t care” or “great looking book, this course is going to be a lot of fun.”

The Catholic Children’s Bible

The Bible Today, July 2013

This is not a collection of favorite Bible stories, but a complete Bible, the Good News Translation.  Still, many of the well-known Bible stories are highlighted and given added attention when they appear in the text.  For example, in Exodus 12 the feast of Passover is further explained.  Here the children are invited to think of times when they have been saved, and then they are encouraged to act out the biblical scene.  The pages are well laid out with large print and adequate spacing.  Age-appropriate pictures are placed throughout the book.  Colored tabs help to locate the various biblical books.  In lieu of footnotes an asterisk appears after some versus, indicating that more information can be found in the Appendix at the end of the book.  There one also finds a Bible Time Line, helpful maps, and aspects of Catholic culture such as the list of corporal and spiritual works of mercy, basic prayers, an explanation of the rosary, and a list of biblical passages for “special times.”  This is a fine resource for children.
