Liturgical Press, Loyola Press, Saint Mary's Press Dominate 2013 "Excellence in Publishing Awards"
BALTIMORE, MD - Liturgical Press with six total awards including two 1st place prizes was the big winner in the 2013 Excellence in Publishing Awards announced today by the Association of Catholic Publishers. Loyola Press, Saint Mary's Press, and Image Books each earned three winners each including a total of 5 1st place finishes. The awards will be given out on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the 2013 Religious Booksellers Trade Exhibit (RBTE) in St. Charles, IL. The goal of these awards is to recognize the best in Catholic publishing. Loyola Press's Adaptive Reconciliation Kit came away with the 2013 Book of the Year Award, a follow-up to the Adaptive First Eucharist Kit that was published in 2011. The judges lauded Loyola Press for producing a product to meet the needs of a small segment of the Church-those with autism and special needs-that is geared to the unique learning styles of the students. Nine of the award winners focused on an individual and his or her journey of faith including two titles on Jesus of Nazareth and Dorothy Day, one on St. Ignatius Loyola, and three more contemporary individuals. Mystery--The Varieties of Vernacular Mysticism (Herder and Herder/The Crossroad Publishing Company) and Chasing Mystery (Liturgical Press)--and Vatican II were repeated themes. Awards were given for books falling into nine categories: Biography, Curriculum, General Interest, Inspirational, Prayer and Spirituality, Resources for Ministry, Scripture, Spanish, and Theology. The "Book of the Year" was named from among the first-place finishers of the first nine categories. A complete list of the winners by category follows.
