Saint Mary's Press Releases High School Textbooks Found in Conformity with the Catechism

(WINONA, MN—January 2011)

Saint Mary’s Press is pleased to announce that four textbooks in its Living in Christ series, a new, comprehensive four-year religion curriculum for Catholic high school students, have been found in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church by the USCCB’s Subcommittee on the Catechism.

The Living in Christ series is developed according to the U.S. Bishops High School Curriculum Framework. The Framework, adopted by the USCCB in November 2007, outlines the central elements of Catholic teaching and practice to be taught within each of six core courses and five possible elective courses over eight semesters of high school religious studies.

The Living in Christ textbooks declared in conformity with the Catechism are as follows: The Bible: The Living Word of God; Jesus Christ: God’s Love Made Visible; The Paschal Mystery: Christ’s Mission of Salvation; and The Church: Christ in the World Today. The Bible and Jesus Christ support freshman semesters one and two as outlined in the Framework, and The Paschal Mystery and The Church support sophomore semesters one and two.

Saint Mary’s Press president and CEO John Vitek says: “Since 1943, Saint Mary’s Press has been committed to communicating the faith to young people in ways that touch their hearts and enliven their minds. This new series of high school texts exemplifies the effectiveness of pedagogy we have become known for, while communicating the content of faith authentically and completely.”
Advance reviews of the texts have been enthusiastic.

Patrick Tiernan, a religious education department chair at Boston College High School, says, “The series is scholarly without being abstract, and engaging without being overbearing. It serves as the ideal intersection of bringing the Good News into any classroom while recognizing that students come from diverse backgrounds with unique learning styles.”
