Pauline Year

Concluding the Pauline Year
by Ginny Halbur

June 29th is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. It also concludes a yearlong celebration inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI honoring the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Saint Paul. One way to help families and members of the parish celebrate the conclusion of this tribute would be to hold a family movie night showing a film on the life of Saint Paul, offering a time for discussion afterwards. You might consider using all or part of one of the following videos that cover the life and legacy of Paul and his impact on Christianity:

  • Peter and Paul (1981), 194 minutes. A television mini-series featuring Anthony Hopkins.
  • The Story of Paul the Apostle (2003), 68 minutes. This documentary, narrated by Martin Sheen, was produced by The History Channel.
  • Empires: Peter and Paul and the Christian Revolution (2003), 110 minutes. This video was produced by PBS, which offers some excellent teacher resources to accompany the video on their Web site.
  • The Search for Paul (2004), 88 minutes. This video is an ABC News presentation with Peter Jennings.

All these videos are available for purchase through Amazon.com but they may also be available to loan through your local diocesan or public library. For more prayers, activity ideas, and information on Saint Paul and the Pauline year, go to the SMP Web site at http://www.smp.org/StPaul.

Time to Reflect

Take Time to Reflect
by Roxane Kadrlik Chlachula

Summer is a time for our youth to gather together to do community service or go on mission trips. For youth ministers, these events require a great deal of preparation and planning. This is necessary for a positive experience, but in order for the event to be truly meaningful to youth, it is important that reflection be a part of the experience.

Go to http://www.smp.org/ResourcePage.cfm?Article=408 to read an article by Robert Feduccia entitled "The Importance of Process." In this article, Robert writes about the two favorite questions he asks young people to reflect on after their participation in an event.
