Youth
by Ginny Halbur
Confirmation is not the only time we should be intentional about mentoring young people. The qualities that make a good sponsor can also apply to other mentoring relationships with young people--no matter if he or she is a student, a son or daughter, a niece or nephew, an employee, or just a neighbor. These hallmarks of a good mentor or sponsor are adapted from pages 11-12 of Confirmed in a Faithful Community Sponsor's Guide:
- A model of faith. Someone whose beliefs, values, and faith are evident in how they live and interact with others. Their actions speak louder than words.
- A friend who is always there when you need them. Someone who takes interest in those things that are important to the young person--whether it is attending a sporting event or music recital that the young person is participating in or just watching a ball game, playing a video game, or going to a movie with him or her.
- A guide, confidante, and listener. One thing most of us crave, young people included, is someone who will listen to us. We all need someone we can confide in and trust has our best interest at heart.
- Someone who is constantly learning and growing. A good mentor isn't someone who always gets it right or who is perfect but one who is striving to be the best person they can be--someone who gets back up after she or he falls and tries again.
- A companion on the journey. Someone who stays in contact with the young person well beyond the initial situation that brought them together. Someone who is and will be there in good times and bad.

Suggestions for Spiritual Reading for Teens
by Javier Bravo
One of the biggest challenges I had as a high school teacher and campus minister was having the appropriate resource for students who wanted more. Lent serves as a time to present our students with a challenge to go deeper. Many of our youth are thirsting for the interior life. Here are some suggestions that can be presented to your students who may be open to spiritual reading. Scripture is always a great place to start with one's spiritual reading. Day by Day with People in the Bible: Reflections for Teens and Good News, Day by Day: Bible Reflections for Teens from Saint Mary's Press are great resources for teens. They are written in a manner that make the Scriptures accessible to teens, and they facilitate meditation and prayer. Some teens will be able to take either of these books and go off by themselves, others may need a little of your help.
