In the Saint Mary's Press® College Study Bible, Saint Mary's Press takes an innovative approach to teaching the Bible to college-level students. The opening "Letter to College Students," written by two college students, sets the tone for this Bible that strikes a measured balance approach between the academic and the personal. The Saint Mary's Press® College Study Bible uses all the introductions, notes, and text of the New American Bible translation. Additionally, it provides supplemental introductions to all the books of the Bible. These brief introductions are written by contemporary biblical scholars who lay out well the Catholic approach to studying the Bible in language accessible to today's college students. And in what proves to be a creative approach to engaging students to think about the Bible's story as their story, the Saint Mary's Press® College Study Bible regularly inserts brief articles under the heading of Life, Justice and Spirit that challenge the college students to integrate the biblical message into their own lives. I highly recommend using the Saint Mary's Press® College Study Bible on our Catholic college campuses as a means of making Scripture intelligible and real in the lives of the next generation of students.

By Dianne Bergant, C.S.A., Professor of Old Testament Studies, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL

Saint Mary's Press has succeeded in producing a study Bible for the college student. Its format is both attractive, without being ostentatious, and informative, without being overbearing. The New American Bible translation with its introductory essays and footnotes is augmented by additional historical, literary, and theological information. Throughout the text one finds short essays that relate the biblical material with contemporary theological issues. For example, accounts of military conflict are preceded by an essay on war; the story of Mary and Elizabeth is introduced by an essay on faith and friendship. Strategically placed maps and visual reproductions, as well as a substantial final glossary add to the usefulness of this fine educational tool.
Editorial Reviews

The Bible Today, September/October 2007

This edition of the New American Bible is replete with articles, maps, and charts that will serve as helpful study guides for college students. The articles have been written by more than thirty scholars and graduate students. They cover biblical, spirituality, social justice, and life concerns issues. Introductory essays treat topics such as the process of tradition development, historical and cultural contexts, biblical literary forms, and ways of reading the Bible. Shorter essays develop themes such as salvation, care for the earth, or the bond of friendship shared by Mary and Elizabeth. An essay that provides background information on the book, a summary of its structure and the flow of its content, and an explanation of some of the important theological themes introduces each biblical book. This is a fine tool for both group and individual study.
